History of The Anglican Commission The Anglican Commission was established as part of a global movement of orthodox Anglican and Christian leaders committed to preserving Biblical truth, historic Christian doctrine, apostolic faith, and worldwide Gospel mission during a time of major theological and cultural change within portions of the modern Anglican world. The Commission draws upon the rich spiritual heritage of both the Anglican tradition and the ancient Orthodox Christian traditions of Africa and the East. Its foundations are deeply connected to the historic Christian witness that stretches back to the Apostolic Church, the early Church Fathers, and the ancient Christian communities of Africa. The Orthodox dimension of the Church represented within the broader fellowship traces its spiritual roots to the ancient Desert Fathers of Egypt and Ethiopia, whose lives of prayer, holiness, ascetic discipline, scholarship, and devotion helped shape Christian spirituality throughout the world. These early Christian monastics and theologians preserved sacred learning, defended orthodox doctrine, and inspired generations of believers through their pursuit of wisdom, prayer, humility, and communion with God. The Commission also recognizes the historic legacy of Saint Mark the Evangelist, whose missionary work in Alexandria established one of the earliest and most influential Christian centers in history. Through the ancient Patriarchate of Alexandria and the growth of Christianity across Egypt, Ethiopia, and Africa, the apostolic witness of Saint Mark helped shape the theological, liturgical, and spiritual foundations of African Christianity for nearly two thousand years. The ancient Christian churches of Egypt and Ethiopia became among the oldest continuous Christian communities in the world. The theological schools of Alexandria, the monastic communities of the Egyptian desert, and the Christian kingdoms of Ethiopia preserved sacred Scripture, theological scholarship, liturgical worship, and apostolic succession through centuries of challenge and transformation. The Anglican Commission therefore understands itself not only as part of the historic Anglican tradition born from the English Reformation, but also as connected to the much older apostolic and orthodox Christian heritage of Africa and the ancient Church. As Anglican Christianity expanded globally through missionary work, education, and evangelism, large and vibrant Anglican communities emerged throughout Africa, Asia, and the Global South. Over time, many Anglican leaders within these regions became increasingly concerned about theological liberalism, declining Biblical authority, and moral compromise within portions of the modern Anglican Communion. In response, orthodox Anglican bishops, clergy, scholars, and Christian leaders began forming networks and fellowships dedicated to preserving Biblical Christianity, historic doctrine, and faithful Christian witness. The Anglican Commission emerged within this broader movement as a fellowship-oriented body focused on Christian unity, theological education, mission, leadership development, and global cooperation. The Anglican Commission is supported and backed by leaders associated with the Worldwide Anglican Church of Africa and works in fellowship with the broader Global South Anglican and Orthodox Communion, representing a worldwide Christian fellowship connected to more than 100 million believers across Africa, Asia, Europe, and other regions of the world. The Commission was founded upon several enduring principles: The authority of Holy Scripture Faithfulness to historic Christian doctrine Preservation of orthodox Anglican and apostolic traditions Support for faithful bishops, clergy, chaplains, and ministries Evangelism and worldwide Gospel mission Christian education and discipleship Unity among orthodox believers worldwide Preservation of classical Christian morality and theology From its beginning, The Anglican Commission sought to unite Anglicans and orthodox Christian leaders who desired a stronger witness for Biblical truth and apostolic Christianity in the modern era. The rapid growth of Christianity throughout Africa significantly shaped the identity and mission of the Commission. African Anglican and orthodox Christian leaders became increasingly influential in global Christianity because of their commitment to Biblical orthodoxy, prayer, evangelism, discipleship, and traditional Christian teaching. Today, The Anglican Commission continues to support: Leadership conferences and Christian fellowship Chaplaincy and ministry development Biblical and theological education Humanitarian and mission initiatives Christian publishing and scholarship Youth leadership programs Global ministry partnerships Preservation of classical Anglican and Orthodox traditions The Anglican Commission stands as a bridge between the historic Anglican tradition and the ancient apostolic Christian heritage of Africa and the East. It seeks to honor the legacy of the Apostles, the Desert Fathers, the early African Church, and the enduring witness of orthodox Christianity while equipping modern Christian leaders for faithful ministry in the contemporary world. Guided by Scripture, apostolic faith, Christian unity, and global mission, The Anglican Commission continues its work to strengthen the Church, encourage believers, defend Biblical truth, and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the nations. .
